The journey to our destination
Over years of consultation, Aucklanders have agreed on the fundamental things we want the transport network to achieve. This vision and objectives support positive economic, social and environmental outcomes for the region as a whole. They contribute to a city with optimal quality of life.
The RLTS 2005 sets a direction of substantially improving public transport, completing key elements of the strategic road network and a new emphasis on managing the demand for travel.
This strategy builds on the previous one, as well as addressing forces of change and new legislation. It identifies the targets we need to meet by 2040.
The strategy sets out six strategic priorities for reaching our desired destination:
- continuing to improve public transport
- integrating transport and land use to support a compact and contained urban form
- changing travel behaviours
- improving the operation of existing roads
- building limited additional roads
- reducing the impact of travel on the environment and communities.
