Transport in the Auckland region

Who is responsible for regional transport?

Responsibility for transport in the Auckland region is shared among central government, the Auckland Regional Council (ARC), local councils and Auckland Regional Transport Authority (ARTA).

The ARC is responsible for setting the strategic direction for all transport development within the Auckland region and to provide funding (with Land Transport NZ) for public transport and sustainable transport initiatives, such as walking and cycling.

ARTA is an Auckland Regional Council controlled organisation. It undertakes detailed transport planning, is the conduit for all funding (including for local roads and public transport) and manages contracts for rail, bus and ferry services.

Investing in transport

An estimated $11 billion of funding is available for the region's transport during the next 10 years. The Auckland Regional Land Transport Strategy (RLTS) recommends how it should be invested.

Broadly, it is recommended that:

  • 62% should be spent on roading
  • 34% should be spent on public transport, with the final
  • 4% being spent on travel demand management, to comply with legislative obligations.

Who is responsible for our infrastructure?

Responsibility for the regions transport infrastructure is shared by central and local government.  State Highways are the responsibility of national roading authority Transit New Zealand (TNZ). Territorial authorities are responsible for the maintenance and planning of all other public roads.
